Streaming service Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for the comedy series Brothers, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as satirical versions of themselves. The eight-episode show premieres on September 23, 2026.
The plot is based on a real-life family story the actors have discussed in the media: the possibility that they might be paternal half-brothers.
DNA Test Rumors and Living Together on a Ranch
The setup stems from a real-life admission by McConaughey’s mother, who mentioned knowing Harrelson’s father back in the 1970s. The series turns that premise into a comedy: after Woody’s daughter’s wedding goes awry, he moves his whole family to Matthew’s Texas ranch in Austin, where the family matriarch, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally lets a long-held secret slip.
According to Vanity Fair, the actors have intentionally avoided taking a DNA test in real life, choosing to bring the intrigue to the screen instead.
Alongside the main plot, the show will follow McConaughey’s run for governor of Texas and Harrelson’s attempts to find proof of their shared heritage.

Self-Deprecating Humor Over Dark Mystery
Despite marking the stars’ first joint appearance since season one of True Detective, the project is completely devoid of neo-noir drama. As Woody Harrelson explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, viewers can expect a family sitcom that pokes fun at both actors’ screen tropes and real-life habits.
The showrunner for the project is Lee Eisenberg (“The Office”, “Lessons in Chemistry”). The cast also includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, and Jay Duplass.
The first season consists of eight episodes. The first two episodes will premiere on Apple TV+ on September 23, with the final episode set to release on November 4, 2026.
