CD Projekt RED Unveils ‘Songs of the Past’ Expansion for The Witcher 3: Geralt Returns in 2027

At Gamescom 2026, CD Projekt RED held the first official demonstration of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, the third major story expansion for the iconic RPG. The new adventure featuring Geralt of Rivia is set to launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
This release marks the first major expansion for the game in nearly 11 years, following the 2016 launch of Blood and Wine.
Blood and Wine Scale and a Veteran Team
The developers emphasized that they are not creating a small quest pack, but a full-fledged expansion comparable in scope and content to Blood and Wine. This new story will serve as a prologue, preparing players for a new era ahead of the upcoming The Witcher IV trilogy, where Ciri will take on the role of the protagonist.
According to the CD Projekt press office, the expansion is being co-developed by Fool’s Theory, a studio that includes several developers who worked on the original third installment (the team is also currently working on the remake of the first Witcher game).
Approximately 190 specialists are working on the project under the creative guidance of CDPR, while total sales of The Witcher 3 across all platforms have already surpassed 65 million copies.
Cross-Platform Mods and Remaster Status
The developers addressed rumors regarding a “new remaster,” stating there are no plans for a re-release, as current-gen visual improvements were already implemented in the free next-gen patch 4.0.
Alongside the expansion, the team is preparing a separate update for the base game. As reported on the official The Witcher portal, the project will receive a cross-platform mod support system powered by mod.io, allowing fans to install mods not only on PC but also on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
