Sleeping Naked Helps in Heat, but Researchers Debunk Superiority Over Pajamas

The popular claim that sleeping naked is a universal way to boost health and productivity lacks direct support in evidence-based medicine. Studies show that the crucial factor in rest quality is not the absence of fabric, but body thermoregulation and bedroom climate parameters.

There are very few direct comparative clinical trials between sleeping in pajamas and sleeping naked, and physiological markers depend heavily on the environment.

How Overheating Affects Deep and REM Sleep Stages

As you fall asleep, your core body temperature naturally drops. Overly thick blankets, synthetic clothing, or warm room air impede proper thermoregulation.

According to medical reviews on PubMed, excess heat in bed triggers frequent micro-arousals, reducing the duration of slow-wave deep sleep and REM sleep (rapid eye movement), which is responsible for nervous system recovery. In sleep studies conducted at temperatures between 22 and 30 °C, heat consistently reduced overall sleep continuity and efficiency.

Ditching clothes can help those suffering from nighttime overheating. However, the opposite is also true: overcooling the body disrupts sleep just as much as heat, making the optimal choice dependent on fabric type and season.

Carbon Dioxide Concentration and Fresh Air

Room ventilation plays a far more significant role in body recovery. In experiments measuring bedroom climate published in the journal Building and Environment, an open window lowered carbon dioxide levels, extending sleep duration.

According to research in ScienceDirect, an increase in CO₂ concentration from 750 to 1,000–1,300 ppm degrades sleep efficiency metrics and increases nighttime awakenings.

At the same time, the direct link between nighttime air quality and cognitive performance the next day remains inconclusive: memory and logic tests yield mixed results, even though stuffiness creates additional physiological strain on brain blood vessels.

Researchers conclude that sleeping naked is not a unique biohack. The main key to quality rest is preventing overheating and regularly airing out the bedroom before sleep.
