Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Could Break Internal Thickness Record: Leaks Reveal Ultra Dimensions and Price

Apple’s first foldable smartphone, referred to in insider reports as the iPhone Ultra, could feature a body just 4.5–4.8 mm thick when unfolded. If accurate, the device will become the thinnest smartphone in the California company’s history, undercutting even the slender iPhone Air slab phone (5.64 mm). However, the new model won’t claim the title of the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone.
Displays, Dimensions, and Competitor Comparison
Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo provided the key hardware specs in Medium posts. According to his estimates, the model will feature a 5.5-inch cover screen and a large folding inner display measuring around 7.8 inches. When folded, the device will measure 9–9.5 mm thick and weigh between 230 and 241 grams.
While the device will set a record within Apple’s lineup, the company will be playing catch-up in the broader market. As noted by Tom’s Guide, China’s Honor Magic V6 measures 4.0 mm unfolded (8.75 mm folded), while the competing Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is 0.4 mm thinner than Apple’s newcomer at 4.1 mm. Still, for a first-generation complex foldable form factor, these dimensions will allow Apple to enter the top tier of compact foldable devices right out of the gate.
Controversial Naming and a Price Tag Above $2,000
The smartphone’s final commercial name has not yet been finalized. In a post for 9to5Mac, reporter Mark Gurman confirmed that Apple engineers and managers do use the Ultra moniker internally, but marketing teams are simultaneously testing the names iPhone Fold and iPhone Duo.
Sky-high pricing will be the main barrier to mass market appeal. Experts estimate the device will start between $2,299 and $2,499, which would automatically make it the most expensive iPhone ever. Due to the extreme complexity of hinge assembly and low yield rates for flexible OLED panels, retail availability could face significant delays and severe supply shortages.
Apple’s next product event is set for September 9, but whether the company will reveal its foldable hand just yet remains the biggest mystery of the fall announcement.
