Firaxis Adds Fourth Age With Nuclear Deterrence and Earthrise Space Expansion to Civilization VII

Firaxis Games and publisher 2K hosted a special presentation at PAX West 2026 to mark the 35th anniversary of the Civilization franchise. The developers unveiled a 2027 roadmap for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII: the strategy game will receive a full fourth age featuring Cold War mechanics as a free update, followed by Earthrise, its first paid expansion focused on exploring the Solar System.

Free Atomic Age and the Return of Gandhi

At launch, the base game featured three historical eras: Antiquity, the Age of Exploration, and the Modern Age. A major free update titled Arc of Tomorrow will introduce a fourth stage — the Atomic Age, covering events from the mid-20th to the mid-21st century.

According to a 2K Newsroom press release, the new era will feature standalone tech trees, buildings, military units, and unique geopolitical mechanics:

  • Nuclear parity: diplomacy will incorporate the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) and a multilateral agreement system, allowing powers to collectively demand disarmament or trigger escalation;
  • Proxy conflicts: major empires can wage war by proxy using city-states, while intentionally breaking off their own rebellious provinces into neutral enclaves;
  • Culture and industry: powers can enrich weapons-grade uranium and produce cinematic masterpieces, sending film crews to suitable map regions to shoot location footage.

The Atomic Age will introduce a fresh roster of civilizations and leaders, with Mahatma Gandhi confirmed as the first entry. Closed testing of the update’s mechanics will launch in the Firaxis Feature Workshop before the end of 2026.

Space Agencies and Climate Systems in Earthrise Expansion

Following the launch of the fourth age, the game will receive its first paid expansion, Civilization VII: Earthrise. The space program will no longer be limited to a final cutscene of a launching rocket: interest in the skies will begin in antiquity, shift to satellite launches and Moon landings during the Industrial Era, and culminate in the Atomic Age with spaceports built to mine rare minerals on neighboring planets.

Earthrise will also introduce a detailed climate system. Engineering will allow players to build flood defenses and disaster protection, terraform terrain, and halt global warming to pursue a new path to Scientific Victory.

The first batch of updates will arrive in September 2026 with Patch 1.5.0, adding a realistic Earth map with True Start Locations, faster resource generation, and an updated diplomatic negotiation interface.
