Older Porsches Get Modern Infotainment with Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto

Porsche has unveiled a new generation of its factory infotainment system, Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus). It is designed for more than 300,000 911, Boxster and Cayman cars from the 2009–2016 model years and lets owners add modern features without installing aftermarket infotainment.

The new units are made for 997.2 and 991.1 generations of the Porsche 911, as well as 987.2 and 981 generations of the Boxster and Cayman. The system fits in the factory slot and preserves integration with the car’s electronics.

Depending on the trim, PCCM Plus can be controlled from the multifunction steering wheel, while navigation prompts and music information appear on the instrument cluster. The interface is built around a 7-inch touchscreen.

CarPlay and Android Auto now work without cables

The biggest change in the new generation is support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

If needed, a smartphone can be connected via USB — the same interface supports fast charging.

The system also includes Bluetooth streaming with track and artist names, online radio, DAB in Europe and HD Radio in North America.

Navigation now offers satellite imagery, speed limit data and over-the-air map updates. A separate Scenic Roads feature plots routes that favor winding, scenic roads.

In some countries, video playback, including YouTube, is available while the car is parked.

The system keeps the car’s factory functions

PCCM Plus integrates with factory audio systems, the rearview camera and parking assistants.

In the Boxster and Cayman, the factory parking sensors also gain a graphical display of the distance to obstacles on the center screen.

Through the trip menu, drivers can view travel time, range, average fuel consumption, and oil temperature and pressure.

The system has internal and external microphones, a nano-SIM slot with 4G support, and interfaces for external media sources.

The new version is specifically for the 911, Boxster and Cayman

Porsche offers the new PCCM Plus in two versions: for the 991.1-generation 911 and the 981 Boxster/Cayman from the 2012–2016 model years, and for the 997.2 911 and the 987.2 Boxster/Cayman from 2009–2013.

For older Porsches, similar factory systems have existed for a long time. In particular, a separate PCCM Plus is available for the first-generation Cayenne E1, but it belongs to the previous version and uses wired CarPlay and Android Auto.

Porsche announced the new wireless generation specifically for the 911, Boxster and Cayman from the corresponding model years.

PCCM Plus is already available through Porsche centers worldwide. The company recommends having it installed by an official partner, since the set of supported features depends on the specific model, trim and region.
