The Witcher Board Game Prequel Raises Over €10 Million: Players Investigate the Fall of the School of the Wolf in The Witcher: Legacy

Polish publisher Go On Board is teaming up with the creators of the game universe at CD Projekt Red on The Witcher: Legacy, an ambitious story-driven board game. The project will serve as a canonical prequel to the famous video game trilogy, taking players back to a time before the White Wolf was even born. The game’s crowdfunding campaign has become one of the most successful in Gamefound’s history: it hit its €100,000 starting goal in just four minutes, and total pledges have topped a hefty €10 million.
The co-op adventure is designed for one to four players. Instead of controlling Geralt as usual, players create their own witchers of the School of the Wolf. The story kicks off with a tragic event from the past: the heroes must find out who was behind the bloody assault on Kaer Morhen that all but destroyed their order.
A Non-Linear Campaign Worth a Hundred Hours
As CD Projekt Red’s official announcement notes, the game uses a legacy format: decisions players make in the first chapter permanently change the state of the game world, the card decks and how characters treat them in later sessions.
The designers initially expected a single playthrough to take 30 hours, but the scope grew noticeably as story content was added:
- a solo story run from prologue to finale now takes around 40–50 hours of pure playtime;
- with branching quests, moral dilemmas and multiple endings, exploring every version of the story will take more than 100 hours;
- after finishing the main campaign, players unlock a separate hard mode that pits them against the final boss.
89 Stretch Goals and a Companion App
Success on Gamefound let the developers unlock 89 additional crowdfunding goals. In its development updates on Gamefound, the team clarifies an important detail: these are not “89 separate expansions,” as some niche outlets reported, but additions to the contents of the core box — new monster miniatures, gear, scenarios and upgraded components.
To draw players deeper into the atmosphere, the studio is building a dedicated mobile companion app with professional multilingual voice acting for story dialogue and a soundtrack.
The first shipments of the board game to backers are scheduled for June 2027. During the late preorder stage, the base version was priced at €109, while collector’s editions with wooden components and monumental plastic monster figures will cost considerably more.
