‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot Starring Pierce Brosnan and Lily James Set for February 24, 2027 Release

The reimagining of the cult 1990s action movie “Cliffhanger” starring Pierce Brosnan and Lily James has a new release date. According to box office tracker Box Office Mojo, the theatrical premiere of the high-stakes mountain action film has been pushed back to February 24, 2027.
The project was initially developed as a direct sequel to the 1993 original starring Sylvester Stallone as Gabe Walker. However, after the actor’s departure, the filmmakers reworked the concept into a standalone story with a new cast. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (“The Shallows”, “The Commuter”, “Jungle Cruise”).

Dolomites Setting and On-Location Shooting
The story is set in the Dolomites. Veteran climber Ray Cooper, played by Pierce Brosnan, runs a luxury mountain chalet business with his younger daughter Sydney ( Nell Tiger Free). During a trip with a billionaire’s son, the family is taken hostage by an armed gang of kidnappers.
The central character is the older daughter Naomi, played by Lily James. Having survived a severe psychological trauma from a past accident, she is forced to climb the dangerous peaks once again to save her father and sister on her own.
According to ComingSoon, Lily James took professional climbing courses and performed most of her high-altitude stunts without stunt doubles. On-location shooting took place in the Alpine massifs of Italy, Austria, and Germany using large-format cameras. The film also stars Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, and Bruno Gouery.
$100 Million Budget and Release Delay
According to World of Reel, the film’s production budget is around $100 million, funded through private investments and international pre-sales.
Pushing the premiere from late summer 2026 to February 24, 2027 is due to a change in distribution: the project is now handled by the Neon and Decal alliance to organize a wide promotional campaign across several thousand theaters.
Renny Harlin’s 1993 original grossed about $255 million, and the creators of the new Cliffhanger are already in early development of a sequel.
