Cult Shooter You Are Empty Returns After 20 Years: Absolute Edition Announced

The first-person shooter You Are Empty, created by Ukrainian developers in 2006, is getting an updated edition for its 20th anniversary. The project You Are Empty: Absolute Edition will launch October 27, 2026 on PC, and the game’s page is already live on Steam.
The authors have adapted the classic action game for modern hardware while preserving the original aesthetic and atmosphere of Soviet retrofuturism.
Technical Improvements and Sprint Mechanic
The re-release features native support for modern widescreen monitors: the interface, crosshairs, weapons, and story cutscenes now scale correctly without distorting proportions. Graphics settings now include an adjustable field of view (FOV), MSAA up to 8x, anisotropic filtering up to 16x, and a frame rate limiter. Level loading times have been reduced by roughly nine times.
The main gameplay addition is full sprint, which was absent in the original. The shooter also now supports modern gamepads with three button layouts, a Steam achievements system, and the ability to dynamically hide the HUD outside of firefights.
According to GamingOnLinux, the developers have fixed old renderer conflicts with AMD graphics cards and ensured stable performance on Linux and Steam Deck via the Proton compatibility layer.

Alternative 1950s Kyiv and Pricing
The game is set in an alternative 1950s Kyiv. After a large-scale scientific experiment to create the perfect Soviet person goes wrong, the city descends into chaos, and its streets fill with grotesque mutants. The protagonist must make their way through city courtyards, abandoned metro stations, an opera house, and secret laboratories. The arsenal includes historical weapons, from the Mauser C96 pistol and Mosin rifle to the PPSh and experimental electric cannons.
The project is being developed by Digital Spray Studios, Mandel ArtPlains, Jordan Freeman Group, and ZOOM Platform Media.
You Are Empty: Absolute Edition launches October 27 on Steam and ZOOM Platform for $7.99 (with a later release on Epic Games Store), and the original soundtrack will be sold separately for $4.99.
