Google Launches Googlebook, a New Laptop Category with Gemini, Starting at $899

Google has opened preorders for Googlebook, a new category of premium laptops built around Gemini Intelligence and tight integration with Android smartphones. These aren’t Google’s own laptops: the first devices come from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

In the US, the launch lineup includes five models priced from $899 to $1,299. The Acer Googlebook 14 is the most affordable, Dell offers the XPS Googlebook for $999, the Lenovo Googlebook 15 starts at $1,099, and the ASUS and HP models start at $1,299. All five US models have touchscreens, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. They run either Intel Core Ultra 5 or Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors with dedicated NPUs rated at 45 TOPS or higher.

Depending on the model, buyers get LCD or OLED displays ranging from 13.4 to 15.3 inches with resolutions up to 2.8K. The HP Googlebook 14 claims the longest battery life at up to 19 hours, while the other models are rated at 13 to 18 hours.

This isn’t ChromeOS as you know it

Google stresses that Googlebook OS is built on the Android technology stack and uses ChromeOS desktop foundations. So calling it simply a new version of ChromeOS wouldn’t be accurate.

The laptop can transfer saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, messages and some settings from an Android smartphone. Continue On lets you pick up tasks started on your phone on the computer, Files gives access to photos and files from your smartphone, and Cast My Apps lets you run phone apps in a separate window on the desktop.

At the same time, Googlebook keeps the full desktop Chrome browser with extensions and gets access to Android apps from Google Play.

For developers, there’s an isolated Linux environment with a terminal that runs through a pKVM hypervisor. It supports standard Linux tools, repositories and agentic development tools.

Gemini is built right into the interface

One of Googlebook’s key differentiators is deep Gemini Intelligence integration.

The Magic Pointer feature activates when you move the cursor and lets Gemini analyze text, images and context right on the screen. For example, the AI can translate selected text, process information from a document or help organize your calendar.

Rambler turns free-form speech into structured text — notes, to-do lists and other ready-to-use materials. Another feature, Create My Widget, lets you build custom widgets with a simple text prompt. Google describes these capabilities in more detail in a separate post about built-in Gemini.

Every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage, a year of GeForce NOW and several temporary subscriptions to other services. Googlebook OS is promised regular updates for up to 10 years.

Sales start October 4 in the US, and on October 5 the devices go on sale in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Preorders are already open.
