Google Cuts Back Free Gemini: Starting October 9, Only Flash-Lite Remains

Google is changing model access in the Gemini apps for personal accounts. Starting October 9, 2026, users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro, leaving them with only the lighter Flash-Lite. The company has already outlined the new scheme in a separate support document.

After the changes, access will be tied more strictly to subscription tiers. Free accounts will get only Flash-Lite, Google AI Plus subscribers will be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash, and the full set of Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro will remain available to AI Pro and AI Ultra.

So saying that Google is “making Gemini paid” would be an exaggeration: the service itself remains free, but without a subscription users will no longer be able to manually select the more powerful models.

AI Plus Will Also Lose One Model

The changes won’t affect only free users. Google AI Plus subscribers will lose access to Pro, even though that model is currently available to them.

Google isn’t giving a single shutdown date for AI Plus. The company promises to send every subscriber an email with information about when the new scheme will take effect for their specific account.

At the same time, AI Pro will become more capable. AI Pro and AI Ultra users will get Deep Think, a mode for tasks that require the maximum amount of parallel reasoning. Previously it was tied to the more expensive Ultra tier.

Google is also introducing three levels of computational effort for the available models: Low, Medium and High. The higher the selected level, the more resources the model can spend on a response, but the faster the user’s limit will be used up.

It’s Model Access That’s Changing, Not Just Limits

This is a separate change from the compute-based limits system introduced earlier. Gemini already takes into account the complexity of a request, the model being used, features and the length of the conversation, and the limits are updated periodically. Now, on top of that, Google is adding restrictions on the models themselves.

Another important point: Google’s notice applies specifically to Gemini Apps for personal Google accounts. It does not mean that Flash and Pro will simultaneously disappear from free access in Google AI Studio, the API, or corporate or educational accounts — those products have their own rules.

As a result, after October 9 free Gemini will become noticeably more basic: Flash-Lite will remain for everyday requests, while access to Google’s more capable models is effectively tied to a subscription.
