GTA VI Budget Estimated at $1–1.5 Billion: Why Rockstar’s Next Game Could Be the Most Expensive Ever

Max Ivanov · 31.08.2026 10:42 · 4 min read

Financial and gaming industry analysts estimate total development and marketing costs for Grand Theft Auto VI at an astronomical $1–1.5 billion. If these calculations hold true, the Rockstar Games project will become the most expensive media product in entertainment history, far surpassing the budgets of today’s biggest gaming blockbusters and flagship Hollywood film franchises.

Although Take-Two Interactive management has not officially disclosed the exact breakdown of expenses (CEO Strauss Zelnick succinctly called the project “very expensive”), the scale of investment is confirmed by comparative market analysis.

Comparing Record-Holders: From The Last of Us to Call of Duty

To put that scale into perspective, compare GTA VI’s estimated budget with official numbers revealed during recent court proceedings:

  • The Last of Us Part II: around $220 million (pure development costs excluding advertising);
  • Horizon Forbidden West: around $212 million;
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III: over $450 million across its full lifecycle;
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: over $640 million;
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War: over $700 million—still one of the industry’s most expensive officially confirmed projects, according to a Game File investigation.

Even cinema falls short of the gaming giant: the most expensive film in history, Jurassic World Dominion, cost Universal roughly $659 million in gross expenses (about $531 million after tax credits). Thus, at an upper estimate of $1.5 billion, the budget for GTA VI is more than double the cost of Hollywood’s most ambitious blockbusters.

A Decade of Evolution: From Project Americas to Release

Such high production costs are driven by the unprecedented duration and scope of development:

  • 2014–2018: early conceptual design under the working title Project Americas;
  • 2018–2020: shifting the studio’s main development resources to the project after completing Red Dead Redemption 2;
  • 2020–2026: full-scale active development, motion capture, and procedural simulation technology creation.

According to estimates by analysts at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, Rockstar Games’ total workforce has more than doubled since the release of RDR2, uniting thousands of developers, animators, writers, and engineers around the globe.

What Launches on November 19: Story Campaign vs. Online Mode

Amid budget rumors, unconfirmed reports surfaced online alleging a simultaneous launch of a new multiplayer mode.

The publisher’s official stance is clear: November 19, 2026 will see the exclusive launch of GTA VI’s single-player story campaign priced at $79.99 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The studio remains silent regarding plans, format, and launch date for the next generation of GTA Online—the multiplayer component will traditionally receive a separate reveal later.

Franchise Economics: 230 Million Copies of GTA V and an $8 Billion Forecast

A $1.5 billion investment appears economically justified given the phenomenal performance of its predecessor. According to Take-Two’s SEC filings:

  • sales of Grand Theft Auto V have nearly reached 230 million copies (bringing total franchise sales over 465 million);
  • total lifetime revenue for the GTA V and GTA Online ecosystem is estimated by experts at up to $10 billion.

Driven by the launch of the sixth installment, Take-Two projects annual net bookings in fiscal year 2027 to jump to a record $8.0–8.2 billion (up from $6.72 billion the previous year). A game release of this magnitude is capable of single-handedly rewriting the financial metrics of its parent corporation.

The global premiere of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s single-player campaign will take place on November 19, 2026. Pre-orders are already available on the official Rockstar Games website.
