Netflix Unveils First Look at ‘Quasimodo: The Soul of Paris’ Starring Vincent Cassel

Netflix has released the first images from the historical drama ‘Quasimodo: The Soul of Paris’ (Quasimodo, l’âme de Paris), starring Vincent Cassel in the lead role. The film, directed by Jean-François Richet, arrives on the streaming service on November 27, 2026.

Despite the familiar character, the new film is not another direct adaptation of Victor Hugo’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’. According to Netflix’s official description, the filmmakers offer a fictional story about a man who may have inspired the writer to create Quasimodo.

The story unfolds in Paris on the eve of the July Revolution of 1830. The capital is gripped by political unrest and threatened by a cholera epidemic, and Cassel’s character finds himself caught between the revolutionary events and an impossible love.

Quasimodo Becomes the Subject of Medical Experiments

The new version departs noticeably from Hugo’s story. Quasimodo is pursued by a security chief and a doctor who intends to use the peculiarities of his body for medical experiments amid the spread of cholera.

The filmmakers thus blend historical drama, thriller and adventure action, while also touching on class inequality, society’s treatment of people with physical differences and 19th-century medical ethics.

The concept is based on a hypothesis by British archivist Adrian Glue about a real Parisian stonemason with a physical deformity whom Hugo could theoretically have known. Richet himself stresses, however, that the film uses this idea only as a plausible artistic starting point, not as an established historical fact.

In its own announcement of fall premieres, Netflix also carefully frames the plot as a reimagining of the life of a man who is “considered a possible inspiration” for the famous character.

Cassel Teams Up Again with the Director of ‘Mesrine’

Alongside Vincent Cassel, the film stars Karim Leklou, Benjamin Voisin, Daphné Patakia, Noémie Lvovsky, Sébastien Pouderoux, Élie Nahmani and Alexis Rosenstiel.

Director Jean-François Richet has worked with Cassel several times before. Their best-known collaboration remains the two-part saga about Jacques Mesrine, for which the actor won a César Award.

The screenplay for ‘Quasimodo’ was written by Éric Besnard and Edgar Marie, with Clément Miserez and Matthieu Warter of Radar Films producing. The details also appear in Netflix’s official French release calendar.

The first materials show a striking transformation of Cassel for the role and confirm that Netflix is betting not on a classic romantic adaptation of Hugo’s novel, but on a standalone dark story that uses the figure of Quasimodo and Paris in 1830 as its foundation.
