OpenAI releases official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux

OpenAI has introduced a preview version of the official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux. According to The Decoder, the program combines ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the autonomous coding agent Codex into a single client.
The client is distributed as .deb and .rpm packages for x64 and ARM64 architectures. Official support is confirmed for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, as well as Fedora 43 and 44. The app features an integrated browser, support for Chrome extensions, and voice controls.
During the testing phase, the Linux version lacks the Computer Use feature, which allows AI to interact with third-party applications like GIMP. Additionally, screen capture (Appshots), Record & Replay, and system-level voice commands for application control are unavailable at launch.
Desktop versions for macOS and Windows debuted in July. The new Linux program offers a GUI for tracking projects, files, and code changes.
