OpenAI Releases Official ChatGPT Desktop App for Linux

OpenAI has released a preview version of its official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux-based operating systems. According to The Decoder, the program combines ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the autonomous coding agent Codex into a single client.

The client is distributed as.deb and.rpm packages for x64 and ARM64 architectures. Official support is announced for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. The app includes a built-in browser, support for Chrome extensions, and voice control.

During the testing phase, the Linux version lacks the Computer Use feature, which allows the AI to interact with third-party applications like GIMP. Also unavailable at launch are Appshots, Record & Replay, and system voice commands for controlling programs.

The desktop app for macOS and Windows debuted in July. The new Linux program offers a graphical interface for visually tracking projects, files, and code changes.
