Rumor: DC Studios Delays Wonder Woman Movie Following Supergirl Box Office Flop

DC Studios has temporarily deprioritized development of its standalone Wonder Woman movie. According to Knight Edge Media editor-in-chief Caleb Williams, the Princess Diana project was “put on the back burner” following the weak box office performance of sci-fi action feature Supergirl. Leadership of the rebooted DC Universe, headed by James Gunn, has not officially announced the film’s cancellation, and production remains in the script development stage.

Supergirl Box Office Losses and Script Delay

The primary reason cited for the schedule revision is the disappointing theatrical run of the solo Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock. The film grossed just $126.4 million worldwide against a production budget of around $170 million and substantial marketing costs.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery could face box office losses ranging from $80 million to $100 million. Amid budget optimization efforts, executive leadership is unwilling to risk launching another costly standalone feature without guaranteed audience interest.

The screenplay for the solo Wonder Woman movie is being written by Ana Nogueira, who also penned Supergirl. Over the summer, Nogueira noted in an interview with TheWrap that the project was in the early drafting stages. No writer replacement has been reported, but the studio chose not to rush pre-production.

Adria Arjona Casting Rumors and James Gunn’s Approach

Following the leak, claims emerged online alleging that the role of the Amazon had already been secured by actress Adria Arjona, who appears in Man of Tomorrow. However, this rumor lacks official basis: James Gunn previously stated directly that casting for Diana Prince in the DCU has not yet opened.

DC Studios leadership maintains its stance. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn reiterated the company’s core policy: film production will not move forward based on strict deadlines until the studio is completely satisfied with the final script.

According to film portal World of Reel, the pause on Wonder Woman does not signal the project’s cancellation. The studio plans to focus on its cornerstone film, Man of Tomorrow (scheduled for release on July 9, 2027), to restore viewer trust before launching solo projects for other key Justice League superheroes.
