Gaming outlets have published their first reviews of The Blood of Dawnwalker, a dark action RPG from Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio founded by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz and CD Projekt RED veterans. Press reception has been strong: the game holds an average score of 85 out of 100 on OpenCritic based on 88 reviews, earning a Mighty rating.

The game launches on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Score Breakdown: Acclaimed Story, Criticized Combat

Most reviewers agreed that the studio delivered a bespoke, old-school story-driven RPG, though several outlets knocked points off for rough optimization and repetitive combat.

In IGN’s review, which awarded the title a 9/10, critics called it one of the finest narrative RPGs of recent years, highlighting the deep impact of choices and the absence of artificial open-world padding.

Meanwhile, PC Gamer magazine (83/100) praised its gothic atmosphere while pointing out technical bugs, frame rate drops, and unpolished animations typical of an independent team’s debut major release.

30-Day Limit: How the Timer System Works

The game’s primary innovation is a time-management mechanic: protagonist Coen has only 30 in-game days to save his family.

Unlike typical stress-inducing timers, the clock does not tick in real time while exploring locations or gathering herbs:

  • days are spent as a tactical resource strictly when taking on main story quests and moral dilemmas;
  • before starting a major quest, the game explicitly warns players how many hours or days the trip will take;
  • due to the strict limit, seeing every branch and location in a single playthrough is impossible, driving replayability and freeing the map of generic grind.

Human by Day, Predator by Night

The protagonist belongs to a rare caste known as “Dawnwalkers,” balancing two natures:

  • Day phase: Coen operates as an ordinary human, relying on blades, alchemy, ranged weapons, and basic spells;
  • Night phase: his vampire nature awakens, allowing him to run up walls and ceilings, vanish into a cloud of blood mist, and unleash devastating inhuman magic in combat.

The day-night shift opens up alternative quest paths; fortified keeps that are impenetrable by day can be bypassed at night across rooftops in mist form.

The combat system centers on directional attacks and blocks with parries tied to the swing direction—a mechanic some critics felt grew slightly tedious toward the end of the 40-hour campaign.

14th-Century Alternate Europe Setting

The story unfolds in the region of Sangora (inspired by the Carpathians and Central Europe) at the height of the Black Death epidemic, as ancient vampire clans led by the tyrant Brencis take advantage of weakened human kingdoms. The narrative intentionally avoids black-and-white framing, forcing players to choose the lesser evil.

As noted on the official The Blood of Dawnwalker website, the game is designed as the first standalone chapter of a major historical franchise, with future installments set in other historical eras and regions of the world.
