Samsung May Get $250 for Every iPhone Duo Foldable Screen — Apple’s Exclusive Deal Runs Three Years

The internal flexible OLED display for Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, may cost the US company around $250 apiece. Insider Instant Digital reported this, citing supply chain sources, and confirmed that Samsung Display has locked in a three-year exclusive contract to supply the foldable panels to Cupertino. The two sides have not officially commented on the financial details of the deal, but the high cost of the panel explains the device’s $1999 starting price.
Samsung’s monopoly and the lack of alternatives
The reports of a long-term agreement line up with data from South Korean sources. Industry publication The Elec reported that Apple has guaranteed purchases of foldable screens only from Samsung Display, placing an initial order for about 3 million panels.
The reason for the supplier’s unchallenged position is a shortage of mature production lines:
- Chinese company BOE supplies panels to local brands but has not yet passed Apple’s strict checks for fold-cycle endurance and factory defect rates;
- LG Display has no experience with high-volume assembly-line production of compact foldable phone screens.
As a result, Apple had to accept the financial terms set by its main competitor’s division, locking in a high base cost for the component.
$250 per panel versus $70 for standard iPhones
As AppleInsider points out, the $250 cost is one-eighth of the US retail price of the base iPhone Duo. For comparison, a conventional OLED panel for a standard iPhone Pro costs the company an average of $70.
The $250 covers only the internal flexible panel, not the external display, controllers or assembly. According to the iPhone Duo specs on Apple’s website, the 7.6-inch foldable Super Retina XDR screen runs at up to 120Hz, peaks at 3000 nits of brightness and has a special nanotexture coating to cut glare.
According to 9to5Mac, preorders for the new device open on October 16, with shipments to buyers starting on October 23, 2026. The exclusive contract makes the iPhone Duo a lucrative revenue source not only for Apple itself but also for Samsung Display, which has effectively gained a monopoly on servicing Cupertino’s first foldable phone.
