Display Flush with Metal: Tecno Unveils ‘Zero-Bezel’ Concept Phone at IFA

At IFA 2026 in Berlin, Tecno showcased a working prototype of its Next-Gen Bezelless Concept Phone. The device’s standout feature is the illusion of an entirely bezel-free display: the active area of the 6.78-inch OLED screen extends directly to the aluminum frame without the usual black border around the perimeter. Engineers achieved this look not through fragile curved “waterfall” glass, but by redesigning the internal screen layout.

Dual-Layer Glass and Hidden Display Mounting

On modern flat displays, the inactive black border around the panel takes up between 1mm and 2mm to accommodate electrode traces and sealant. For this concept, engineers tucked this functional border inside the metal chassis.

As The Verge explains, the design uses a two-layer glass sandwich:

  • The top protective layer sits flush with the phone’s metal edge;
  • The bottom layer, along with the inactive edges of the 144Hz OLED panel, extends directly under the metal frame;
  • The display module is glued in from inside the chassis rather than installed from the front.

Viewed head-on, the black bars are virtually invisible—the glowing pixels run right up against the polished metal. Only at steep viewing angles around the curved corners can a microscopic seam line be spotted.

Ergonomic Trade-Off and Production Status

The revised assembly approach required an ergonomic trade-off: the metal frame sits slightly raised above the flat protective glass. According to hands-on impressions from Android Authority, fingers frequently bump against the protruding metal lip when performing standard back-swipe gestures.

Under the hood, the concept uses standard production hardware from the brand: a 6,000mAh battery, a MediaTek Dimensity series chipset, and 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage.

According to Tecno’s official announcement, the prototype will not go on retail sale and is intended as a showcase of engineering capabilities. Even so, the design presents a viable alternative to curved-edge displays, delivering a truly bezel-free look on a flat screen.
