Four Years After Filming Was Halted: Jessica Lange and Ed Harris Drama Finally Heads to Theaters

The psychological drama “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” starring two-time Oscar winner Jessica Lange and four-time nominee Ed Harris, has landed a U.S. theatrical release date. Quiver Distribution will open the film in theaters on September 25, 2026, following a special gala screening at New York’s Lincoln Center.
Financing Collapse in Ireland and a Protracted Post-Production
The adaptation’s production history proved unusually troubled. Location shooting began in County Wicklow, Ireland, in the fall of 2022, but after just a few shifts the work had to be halted urgently when the producers suddenly ran out of money and crew payments fell behind.
As The Irish Times reported, independent investors from BK Studios rescued the project, covering the debts and allowing filming to wrap at the end of November 2022.
The editing, color grading and search for distributors, however, stretched on for another two years. In an interview with People, Jessica Lange admitted that the film was only finally completed in the spring of 2024. After screenings at festivals in Dublin and Nantucket, the movie has finally reached a full commercial release.
A Pulitzer Classic and a Broadway Triumph
The film is based on Eugene O’Neill’s autobiographical play, for which the playwright was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The story depicts a single day in the life of the Tyrone acting couple in August 1912, gradually exposing a family tragedy built on mutual recriminations, alcoholism and the mother’s severe morphine addiction.
Jessica Lange plays Mary Tyrone, while Ed Harris takes on the role of her husband, James. Their feuding sons are played by Ben Foster and Colin Morgan.
The film marks the feature debut of director Jonathan Kent, though he had already staged the play on Broadway in 2016 with Lange. As Playbill notes, that stage performance earned the actress a prestigious Tony Award, so the film brings her canonical stage portrayal to the screen.
According to ComingSoon, the release marks Lange’s return to the big screen after a string of series roles. The distributor will announce the international release schedule and streaming dates separately.
