Japan Aims to Make Pig-to-Human Kidney Transplants Standard Procedure by 2033

Japanese biotech startup PorMedTec, a spinoff from Meiji University, has unveiled a plan to address the organ donor shortage. The company intends to introduce clinical procedures for transplanting genetically modified pig kidneys into humans.

Trial Timeline and Regulatory Approval

The project’s roadmap is divided into several key stages:

  • 2028: Launch of Japan’s first clinical trials for pig kidney xenotransplantation in humans.
  • 2029–2030: Obtaining conditional approval from Japanese government regulatory authorities.
  • 2033: Integration of the surgery into standard medical practice as a full alternative to dialysis.

Genetic Modifications by eGenesis

To prevent immediate rejection of foreign tissues by the human immune system, researchers are utilizing cells from the American biotech company eGenesis.

A total of 69 genetic changes are introduced into the pig DNA:

  • Immune Masking: Modifications alter the organ’s tissue structure, making it biocompatible with the human body.
  • Virus Removal: Endogenous porcine retroviruses, which pose a potential risk to humans, are completely edited out of the genome.

According to surgeons, the vascular system of these modified animals almost perfectly matches the anatomical structure of human blood vessels.

Practical Experience and Results in the US

The technology has already demonstrated its viability during experimental surgeries in the United States. The fourth American patient to receive a modified kidney transplant was able to live safely without dialysis for a record 9 months (271 days). This provided the necessary time for a subsequent successful transplant of a donor human organ.
