NVIDIA Launches DLSS 5: 3D Neural Rendering Transforms Real-Time Graphics, NBA 2K27 First to Get It

NVIDIA has officially announced the release date for the long-awaited DLSS 5 technology — it will launch on September 3, 2026 in the sports sim NBA 2K27. The new generation goes far beyond classic resolution upscaling or frame interpolation: the technology introduces 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, a generative neural network that, during rendering, adds photorealistic lighting, subsurface scattering on skin, hair physics, and fabric detail on top of the engine’s geometry.

At launch, the technology will be supported exclusively on GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards and in the GeForce NOW Ultimate cloud service.

How 3D-Guided Neural Rendering Works

Unlike earlier DLSS versions that reconstructed pixels from low resolution, DLSS 5 integrates into the final stage of the graphics pipeline.

According to NVIDIA’s official announcement, the neural network analyzes not just the finished 2D frame, but the full set of the game engine’s auxiliary buffers:

  • object motion vectors;
  • normal and depth maps of geometry;
  • physical properties of materials and light sources.

Based on this 3D data, the AI generates physically correct optical effects in real time that are too resource-intensive to compute directly: subsurface light scattering through the cartilage of athletes’ ears and skin, realistic contact shadows, micro-textures of pores, and natural folds in basketball jerseys. The system is deterministic and strictly tied to the scene geometry, eliminating flickering and texture “swimming” during motion.

Response to “Yassification” Criticism and Total Developer Control

The March announcement of the technology sparked a major industry scandal: in the demo version of Resident Evil Requiem, the neural network smoothed the face of the protagonist Grace Ashcroft, altering her facial expressions. Tech media like PC Gamer’s report criticized the technology for distorting the author’s style and imposing “synthetic AI beauty.”

By release, NVIDIA has completely reworked the toolkit for game studios:

  • Semantic masks: developers can precisely specify which objects are allowed to be enhanced (e.g., clothing, arena parquet, and vegetation), while imposing a complete ban on altering character faces;
  • Stylization profiles: processing presets DefaultNatural, and Cinematic have been introduced;
  • Intensity controls: the Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity sliders allow limiting AI intervention in the original color palette.

Neural Rendering Costs Up to 50% FPS: Why 6X Generation Saves the Day

Generative post-processing turned out to be extremely heavy: according to The Verge’s report, pure 3D-Guided Neural Rendering reduces the base frame rate by 50–60%.

The new technology aims for maximum visual realism, and to compensate for the performance drop, NVIDIA uses a combination of Super Resolution upscaling and Multi Frame Generation 6X frame generation (generating five intermediate frames for each hardware-rendered one).

Availability for RTX 50 and Modder Experiments

Officially, DLSS 5 is hardware-optimized for the 5th-generation tensor cores of the Blackwell architecture. RTX 40 series cards do not support the technology at launch.

However, enthusiasts have already extracted the auxiliary libraries from an early build and successfully activated neural rendering in Cyberpunk 2077, Control, and Skyrim on RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 cards. But without official masks from game developers, homemade integration often leads to stylistic distortion.

Release Date

The DLSS 5 patch for NBA 2K27 will be available on September 4 at 07:00 Kyiv time, alongside the fresh GeForce Game Ready driver. Toggling neural rendering in real time is assigned to the F9 hotkey. Cloud gamers with a GeForce NOW Ultimate subscription will get access to the technology on virtual servers with RTX 5080.
