BMW Unveils Deep Orange 17 Solar-Powered EV Concept: It Generates More Energy Than It Consumes

BMW, in collaboration with engineers from Clemson University, has unveiled the Deep Orange 17, a concept electric vehicle dubbed “Luminetta.” Featuring an ultralight 550 kg chassis and 1,780 solar cells, the vehicle generates more energy than it consumes while in motion.

A team of 16 master’s students from the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research developed the prototype under a direct commission from BMW. The vehicle is built on a high-strength steel chassis, with individual components crafted from aluminum, carbon fiber, and 3D-printed metal parts. Weighing in at 550 kg, the car is roughly three to four times lighter than standard production electric vehicles.

Solar panel technology and performance in shaded conditions

The angular, boxy design is inspired by the shape of the tropical boxfish. The integrated photovoltaic cells were developed in collaboration with the German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). These specialized cells are capable of capturing ultraviolet radiation, allowing them to generate power efficiently even when partially shaded by urban buildings or trees.

The vibrant orange finish is actually a specialized protective film applied over the solar cells using laser texturing. It shields the delicate electronics from scratches and physical damage.

Simulations and internal architecture

Engineers estimate that during a typical 20 km urban commute, the electric vehicle can generate enough solar energy to extend its range by an additional 50 km. The mathematical model was tested against climate data, solar incidence angles, and urban density for four cities: Greenville (USA), Frankfurt (Germany), Madrid (Spain), and Mumbai (India). In every scenario, the vehicle demonstrated its ability to accumulate a net energy surplus in its battery.

The cabin features a digital interface that displays real-time telemetry and power system status. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

BMW and the university have opted not to disclose the specific power output or performance metrics of the electric motors. The developers noted that speed was not a priority, as the primary goal was to prove the fundamental physical feasibility of “energy-positive” transport. A public demonstration of the Deep Orange 17 is scheduled for CES 2027.
