Mercedes-AMG Preps GT Black Series Supercar: RWD, Flat-Plane V8, and Lighter Body

Mercedes-AMG is testing the track-focused GT Black Series supercar, which is slated for a 2027 reveal. In an interview with Autocar, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed the model’s development, calling it a road-going version of the next-generation GT3 race car.
The new model will be the seventh car in the brand’s history to carry the Black Series badge. Unlike the standard all-wheel-drive AMG GT 63 Pro coupe (603 hp), the road-going racer will get a revised flat-plane V8 with output significantly exceeding the base model’s. To comply with FIA GT3 regulations and cut weight, engineers will drop the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system entirely in favor of rear-wheel drive (RWD).
Weight Reduction and Race-Bred Chassis
The car’s weight is targeted at 1400–1500 kg, down from 1950 kg for the standard GT 63 Pro. The rear seat row will be removed entirely, resulting in a two-seat layout.
Instead of the 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic, the supercar will feature a strengthened 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission mounted at the rear axle in a transaxle layout to optimize weight distribution. Prototypes are being tested on track with center-lock racing wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R semi-slick tires.
Extreme Aerodynamics
The body will feature an adjustable rear wing with a swan-neck mounting. The rear window is replaced by a solid carbon-fiber panel with an integrated air intake for transmission cooling. Exhaust outlets are routed into the side sills just ahead of the rear wheels.
Sales of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series are set to begin in 2028. Its key market rival will be the homologated track car Toyota GR GT.
