iOS 27 launches September 14 with Siri AI, separate volume controls, and full iPhone compatibility list

Apple has officially confirmed the release schedule for the final version of iOS 27. The free public update for all compatible iPhones will roll out on Monday, September 14, 2026. The company hasn’t trimmed the list of supported devices: every model that ran iOS 26 will get the update, including the iPhone 11, which will enter its eighth year of official software support.

The main driver of the new system is deep integration of Apple Intelligence and the redesigned Siri AI voice assistant, but the update also brings a host of long-awaited quality-of-life improvements, from separate volume controls to a feature for pairing two iPhones.

Cupertino is maintaining generational continuity: iOS 27 will run on phones dating back to 2019:

• iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max;
• iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max;
• The entire iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 lineup;
• The latest iPhone 18 flagships and the foldable iPhone Duo;
• iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020) and newer.

However, there’s a hard hardware cutoff between installing the base OS and accessing AI features. As 9to5Mac notes, running on-device Apple Intelligence models and the full Siri AI experience requires at least an A17 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM. That means neural network features will be available to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, the entire iPhone 16, 17, and 18 series, and the iPhone Duo.

Siri AI: on-screen context and complex in-app actions

The voice assistant is getting the biggest update in its history. According to Apple’s official press release, the system is built on specialized Apple Foundation Models.

The assistant can now:

• Understand what’s on screen (Screen Awareness): you can say “send this photo to Mom” or “save this address to Notes,” and the system will accurately identify the object in question;
• Perform actions inside third-party apps: Siri can find specific documents in Mail, edit images in editors, and send files through messaging apps with a single voice command;
• Work in a separate dialog window: the assistant now has a full-screen chat interface with conversation history, and on newer models it’s summoned by swiping down from the Dynamic Island.

At launch on September 14, Siri AI will be available as a public beta in English. Apple plans to roll out support for French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese gradually in subsequent iOS 27.1 and 27.2 updates.

Liquid Glass design and separate volume controls

The system’s visual style continues to evolve last year’s Liquid Glass design concept. Settings now include a dedicated interface transparency slider, letting users manually adjust the frosted effect on the notification shade, widgets, and system panels to their liking. The update also adds new color palettes for app icons and expanded fonts for the lock screen.

The second long-awaited change is a revamped audio engine. iOS 27 finally introduces separate, independent volume sliders:

• A separate slider for incoming calls and notifications;
• Isolated volume for alarms;
• Independent adjustment for timers;
• A separate level for media and system keyboard sounds.

This eliminates the old problem where turning down music before bed could accidentally cause the morning alarm to go off silently.

Faster AirDrop and iPhone Handoff for switching between devices

Engineers have significantly optimized system performance. According to The Verge, cold launch times for heavy apps have been reduced, rendering of the photo library in the Photos app is faster, and switching between cellular towers and Wi-Fi networks has been sped up. AirDrop has received a software speed boost on compatible devices thanks to improved packet compression.

For users with multiple smartphones, iPhone Handoff debuts: it lets you pair a second iPhone as an additional terminal, receiving calls and messages from a single cellular number via a Companion eSIM digital card without physically transferring your plan. The feature requires carrier support.

How to prepare for the update

According to MacRumors, the rollout will begin on September 14 at approximately 1:00 p.m. ET. The update will be delivered over the air via Settings → General → Software Update. Before installing, it’s recommended to back up your device to iCloud or your computer and free up 8 to 12GB of storage on your iPhone.
